On Thursday, 30 July 2026, the Kiribati Seabed Minerals Technical Advisory Committee (KISMTAC) and the National BBNJ Committee convened a joint consultation at the KIFL Boardroom, Ambo, to consider recent developments relating to the proposed deep-seabed mineral exploration activities by American Deep Sea Minerals (ADSM) in the Penrhyn Basin, an area beyond national jurisdiction adjacent to Kiribati's maritime zones.
The Committees reviewed information available in the public domain and correspondence received by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR), noting that the complete application and supporting technical documentation have not been made available to Kiribati. Members agreed that further information is required before a comprehensive technical assessment can be undertaken.
The meeting reaffirmed the importance of safeguarding Kiribati's national interests through a science-based, evidence-driven and coordinated approach.
The Committees agreed to seek further clarification through appropriate channels, engage with ADSM to request the relevant technical information, continue national assessment as additional information becomes available, and monitor relevant international legal and policy developments.
KISMTAC and the National BBNJ Committee remain committed to providing technical advice to Government and supporting the responsible governance, sustainable use and protection of Kiribati's ocean interests.
