Kiribati Strengthens Regional Fisheries Science Leadership

The 22nd Regular Session of the Scientific Committee (SC22), convened in Apia Samoa from 11–19th August 2026, brings together scientific experts and representatives from all WCPFC members to review the latest fisheries information and provide scientific advice for the sustainable management of fish stocks and marine ecosystems in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO).

The plenary discussions are organized around four key thematic sessions: Data and Statistics, focusing on the quality, availability, and analysis of fisheries data required for effective decision-making; Ecosystem and Bycatch Mitigation, addressing ecosystem impacts, bycatch reduction, and measures to minimize interactions with vulnerable marine species; Management Issues, considering conservation and management measures and their implications for sustainable fisheries; and Stock Assessment, examining the status, trends, and productivity of key fish stocks to support sound management advice.

As a key member of the Scientific Committee, Kiribati actively participated in the SC22 discussions, contributing national perspectives and fisheries information to deliberations on stock assessments, conservation measures, ecosystem-based management, and the impacts of climate change on marine resources. Three officers from the Oceanic Division attended the session on behalf of Kiribati, providing technical input and supporting the country’s engagement across the various scientific and management discussions. Their participation strengthened Kiribati’s contribution to regional fisheries science and reinforced the country’s commitment to science-based decision-making, sustainable fisheries management, and the long-term conservation of the WCPO’s marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
