Representatives from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR) participated in the International Training Course on Ocean Dynamics and Ocean Modelling for Developing Countries, held in the People’s Republic of China from 5th–19th September 2026. The programme was conducted through a collaboration between the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and the Second Institute of Oceanography (SIO).

The training provided an important opportunity to strengthen technical knowledge, exchange experiences, and learn about practices and developments relevant to ocean science and marine resource management in Kiribati.

Throughout the programme, participants took part in technical sessions, site visits, and practical learning activities. They also engaged with fellow participants and professionals while gaining valuable insights into ocean dynamics, ocean modelling, and their applications.

As part of the programme, participants also had the opportunity to attend the 2026 Global Ocean Development Forum, which provided a valuable platform for sharing knowledge, discussing emerging issues, and exploring opportunities for international cooperation in ocean development.

The knowledge and skills gained through the programme can contribute to strengthening MFOR’s work and supporting the sustainable management and development of Kiribati’s fisheries and marine resources.
