Strengthening Outer Island Economies Through Micro-Canning Development

MFOR Advances Micro-Canning Projects to Strengthen Outer Island Fisheries and Local Economies
MFOR team visited Nikunau Island from 19–26 October 2026 to conduct a preliminary survey and meet with Island Council members, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to completing the Nikunau Micro-Canning Project, initially funded by FAO. The project is estimated to be 70–80% complete, with operations potentially commencing in 2027 through continued Government support.
The Nikunau and Makin Micro-Canning Projects form part of a pilot initiative to strengthen local fisheries, create employment, and support island economies. The Makin project is estimated to be 40–50% complete, with an MFOR team visit planned soon to assess progress and identify the remaining steps towards completion.
Micro-canning is one of the Government priorities through MFOR so upon successful completion of both projects, the initiative is intended to be replicated across other outer islands of Kiribati, expanding opportunities for local fisheries development and sustainable economic growth.
