The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR), through its Community Based Fisheries Management (CBFM) Programme, recently conducted a three-day training and workshop from 28–30 July 2026 for the Friend In Nanikaai (FIN) community. This was mainly focused on reviewing the Nanikaai Fisheries Management Plan and a refresher enforcement training expanding to Nanikaai youths with the support of MCS&E officers
The workshop was delivered to representatives of the different smaller communities in Nanikaai including the members of the overarching consisting of 2 members from each of the 6 communities within Nanikaai and 20 Nanikaai youths. The workshop gave the opportunity to Nanikaai community members to review their current management plan and make new inputs. Additionally, the refresher enforcement training was conducted for the third time to strengthen the capacity of community members and most importantly expand the training to include youth.
During the workshop participants had the time to share stories and experiences on the challenges and positive impacts they have encountered over the years on their fisheries management rules particularly their Marine Protected Area. These discussions provided valuable insights and informed the review of Nanikaai. Some of the new management rules include imposing catch quotas on strawberry conches and protection of the trash boom infrastructure. On the other hand, the training had equipped Nanikaai village members with knowledge and skills to conduct proper enforcement on any fishing activities within their plan area or adjacent water. The inclusion of youth will ensure effective enforcement given the strong energy and activeness of young people. Not only did the training teach youth a new skill, but it enhanced their knowledge and fostered stewardship over their marine resources.
The participation of youth in fisheries enforcement further strengthened the capacity of Nanikaai to effectively and consistently conduct monitoring and enforcement.
