From 3–7 August 2026, two fisheries officers from the Coastal Fisheries Division (Tarawa and Kiritimati) participated in the Coastal Fisheries Data Analysis Training in Noumea, New Caledonia, facilitated by the Pacific Community (SPC).
The training strengthened participants’ knowledge and practical skills in assessing and managing fisheries where data are limited. Key areas covered included data-poor fisheries concepts, length- and age-based stock assessment methods, data analysis and interpretation, fisheries report writing, and an introduction to FishKit for conducting fisheries stock assessments.
Participants analysed their national fisheries data from the Ikasavea platform using Excel, FishKit and R, and discussed how the results can support effective fisheries management decisions. The knowledge and skills gained will contribute to strengthening fisheries data analysis, stock assessment, reporting and evidence-based fisheries management in Kiribati.
The Ministry extends its sincere appreciation to SPC for facilitating this valuable training and for funding the participation and travel of our officers.
