Sandfish Broodstocks Arrive in Kiribati

Sandfish broodstocks were successfully translocated from Fiji Islands to Kiribati on the 14th of August 2026 after going through a 2 weeks quarantine in Galoa hatchery in Fiji. The sandfish will go through another week of quarantine in Ambo hatchery facility before spawning and rearing started.

The aim of this translocation is to promote sustainable aquaculture development in Kiribati to support employment and export opportunity.

This initiative was funded by the Kiritimati Island Fish Limited in collaboration with the Government of Kiribati and Fiji.

On behalf of the Ministry of Fisheries, I would like to thank the Fiji Government, KIFL staff and the Kiribati Biosecurity for making this translocation possible.
