One Voice for Ara Marawa: Strengthening Ocean Communication Across Kiribati

Another milestone for the Kiribati Marine Spatial Planning Coordinating Committee as the Communications Working Group was established and conducted its first meeting on Tuesday, 25th August 2026.

The purpose of the communication working group is to advocate, promote and support the coordinated communication efforts towards the vision for Ara Marawa policy and work in harmony towards the rebranding of Phoenix Island Protected Area to Phoenix Island Marine Spatial Planning.

Discussions in the first meeting were focused on the Terms of Reference of the working group to ensure that the communication officers from different sectors understand their roles and responsibilities within the group. Another important outcome of this working group is for collaboration amongst the different sectors on advocacy for our ocean and promotion of our traditional communication practices in all the channels that will be implemented in the southern, central and northern parts of Kiribati.
This dedicated team will help ensure that our communities, partners, and stakeholders are well-informed and actively engaged in shaping the future of our ocean spaces.

We acknowledge MFAT for financially supporting this milestone meeting and the esteemed communications and media officers within the committee for their dedication and commitment towards a more coordinated advocacy efforts for Ara Marawa.
