10,000 Milkfish Fry Released to Strengthen Tarawa’s Fisheries

"The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR), through its Coastal Fisheries Division, continues to work closely with Kiritimati Island Fish Limited (KIFL), Zheijang Ocean Family Co., Ltd, Kiribati Fish Limited (KFL), and their shareholder, Shanghai Kaichuang Deep Sea Fisheries Ltd, in implementing the Milkfish Ranching Programme.
The programme involves releasing hatchery-produced milkfish fry into Tarawa Lagoon to help replenish and enhance the wild milkfish population. This initiative aims to strengthen food security, support community livelihoods, and contribute to the sustainable development of Kiribati’s coastal fisheries resources.
On 17 September 2026, approximately 10,000 milkfish fry were successfully released into Tarawa Lagoon. The Ministry sincerely acknowledges and appreciates the continued commitment and support of its joint-venture partners—KIFL, KFL, and Shanghai Kaichuang Deep Sea Fisheries Ltd—in coordinating and implementing this important initiative.
The Milkfish Ranching Programme is an ongoing initiative conducted annually as part of the partners’ shared commitment to strengthening milkfish resources and supporting the long-term wellbeing of communities in Kiribati."
