The IUCN team recently conducted a workshop and training session for the technical team of the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. This initiative was specifically tailored as a GIS refresher program to address the critical needs GIS technical team within the Ministry. Held over three productive days, from the 2nd to the 6th of this month, the workshop brought together participants from the Geoscience, Oceanic Fisheries, and Coastal Fisheries Divisions. Topics covered included Bioregions, Remote Sensing, Habitat Mapping, Data quality in GIS quality for Kiribati’s Islands best practices and standards for GIS data, GEBCO, Special Unique Marine Areas (SUMA), Allen Coral Atlas, Ocean Zoning, and RTK GNSS GPS training. These sessions provided technical staffs with valuable insights and hands-on experience in various mapping processes to inform decision-making. Beyond enhancing technical expertise, the GIS refresher program aims to promote sustainable marine resource management and advance marine spatial planning efforts in Kiribati.
