A new USD12.2 million fisheries infrastructure project for Kiribati, was signed today, 30th April 2025, between the Honourable Minister Ribanataake Tiwau, Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources of the Republic of Kiribati and his counterpart the Honourable Hong Lae-Hyung, Deputy Minister for Ocean and Fisheries from the Republic of Korea. This signing ceremony was conducted during the margins of the 10th Our Ocean Conference in Busan, Korea. This Fisheries Community Development Initiative for Sustainable Fishing in Kiribati project, is an Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) from the Republic of Korea and will finance two key infrastructures in Kiribati such as; the upgrading of the Bairiki Wharf and the construction of a new Fishermen Training Institute in Tanaea, among other things. Deputy Minister Honourable Hong Lae-Hyung acknowledged Kiribati’s continued collaboration with South Korea attested through the long-standing relationship spanning over 46 years. Honourable Minister Tiwau reciprocated with a deep appreciation to the people and Government of South Korea for their continued assistance and commitment to support the people of Kiribati through their cooperation programs, including the Korea Overseas Fishing Association and their fishing companies. This new milestone project is expected to begin immediately this year 2025 in the next months ahead and to be completed by 2029.
