Kiribati Engages in TCC21 to Strengthen Tuna Fisheries Governance
The 21st Technical Compliance Committee (TCC21) held its long-week meeting in Ponape from 24-30 September 2025 and was attended by members of the Western Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), including Kiribati.
TCC is the subsidiary body of the WCPFC tasked to review national obligations and compliance against Conservation and Management Measures (CMMs), addressing Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, strengthening monitoring and enforcement tools and systems, improving data gaps through collecting systems, among others.
Key topics deliberated during this year’s session include High Seas Transhipment, Compliance Monitoring Scheme (CMS), FAD, and the Regional Observer Programme.
Participation ensures our continued commitment to comply with CMMs for the sustainable management of the tuna fisheries upon which we depend for livelihood and economic aspirations, including understanding the significance of work at the national level that contributes to supporting the overall work of the WCPFC in managing tuna fisheries in this region. Acknowledgement to the WCPFC Secretariat and the national EU fisheries project for their funding support to this meeting.
