Unlocking New Fisheries: First Diamondback Squid Caught in Kiritimati's Deep Waters
After multiple attempts, a giant diamondback squid (Thysanoteuthis rhombus) has been successfully caught in Kiritimati using deepwater fishing techniques! This achievement was part of a hands-on deepwater fishing training conducted by the Sustainable Fishing Unit, equipping local fishermen with advanced techniques.
The diamondback squid, highly valued for its firm and flavorful flesh, is a key target species in fisheries across southern and central Japan. Studying its abundance in Kiribati could unlock new economic opportunities for our fishing communities.
MFOR acknowledge the support of the World Bank through the PROP Project for supporting this successful fishing trial.
