Kiribati and Korea Strengthen Ties Through New Fisheries and Infrastructure Projects

The journey of a mutual collaboration between the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), Republic of Korea and the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR), Republic of Kiribati begins today, 22nd October 2025, with the arrival of Dr Eom Myung-Chul, the Resident Representative of MOF ODA Office in Tarawa, Kiribati. Dr EoM will establish their MOF ODA Office in Kiribati to supervise and oversee the implementation of two infrastructure projects namely, the Bairiki Wharf upgrading project and the establishment of a new Fisheries Training Centre project in Tanaea. The Republic of Korea through their ODA program will provide funding and engineering assistance while the Republic of Kiribati will provide office space and facilitate all permitting requirements to ensure these two critical projects run smoothly. These two projects will provide more employment, improved services for fishermen and island ferries and generate more opportunities for the local economy in Kiribati. The Government of Kiribati, through the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources acknowledges the people and Government of the Republic of Korea for their generous assistance to Kiribati, through these cooperation projects.
