H.E. Te Beretitenti Taneti Maamau graciously joined MFOR and the community of Nanikaai today, 6 June 2026, in marking World Ocean Day through a beach clean-up activity. The beach clean-up event was chosen this year as an impactful activity that encourages whole of community gathering to beautify the coastal environment, ensure waste and rubbish does not impact the health of our ocean and protect the resources within the community-based fisheries management site from all forms of pollution. In his remarks, H.E. Taneti Maamau encouraged all youth to continue caring for their coastal environments. He emphasized that keeping the beaches clean not only enhances the natural beauty of their islands but also helps safeguard the ocean and its resources which is our main livelihood. The successful event saw participation from the Miss MFOR Queen, representatives of line Ministries (OB, MTCIC, etc) serving on the National Ocean Coordinating Committee, Moms’ Uprising, youth groups, church organizations, and the local community of Nanikaai. MFOR extends its deepest gratitude to H.E. Taneti Maamau for his leadership, exemplified by his personal presence at the event. As the saying goes, “True leadership is defined by a willingness to be humble and empower others.” H.E Te Beretitenti example sends a clear message to all I-Kiribati: Rise to the challenge of waste and rubbish that threatens our ocean, our island environment, our pride, and our reputation as proud I-Kiribati. If H.E. Taneti Maamau and these dedicated teams can take action, so can you. MFOR again gratefully acknowledges H.E Taneti Maamau and all stakeholders who participated in today’s event, as well as the European Union Sector Support for their financial assistance, which made this event possible.
