MFOR Hosts Workshop to Update Tuna Management Strategy

Tuesday 18 February 2025 marks the workshop's opening on the review of the Kiribati Tuna Management Plan. The Officer In Charge of the Ministry of Fisheries & Ocean Resources (MFOR), Deputy Secretary Mrs. Teue Baikarawa, in her opening remarks, welcomed the visiting team from the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) and the Pacific Community (SPC). She also touched on the significance of the review noting the changes that occurred to the fisheries regime nationally and internationally that need to be reflected in the new plan. Representatives from other divisions of the MFOR are also invited to provide more depth and ensure the comprehensiveness of the plan. The outcome of the work would ensure an updated and more streamlined plan that would guide the activities of the MFOR and divisions. The MFOR acknowledged the support and collaboration from the FFA & SPC on this work as well as the participation of other local stakeholders.

Japan's OFCF Supports Kiribati’s Blue Carbon Project

The blue carbon project is one of the many projects that's implemented by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources through the Coastal Fisheries Division in Kiribati. The project started in 2023- 2024 with the main goal to facilitate blue carbon and fisheries development in Kiribati.
As part of the project, this week a team from OFCF visited Kiribati to hold a joint committee meeting with the Ministry to discuss on the projects' achievements and areas for future collaborations in the area of blue carbon and its significance to the fisheries sector.
The OFCF team led by Mr Shimamoto Kunikazu, the Assistant to Managing Director of the Technical Cooperation Department, Mr Sugiyama Ryo, the Senior Officer of the Project Operation Division and the Ms Redford Kayako, the Interpreter have conducted a 2-day meeting with the Officer in Charge Mrs. Teue Baikarawa joined by the team from the Aquaculture Unit, CFD and the Planning and Development Division, in support of the project implementation.
'It is interesting to know the potential areas of research in this project which could provide capacity in country to look at skills in calculating the amount of blue carbon potential that is absorbed within our coastal ecosystems, in particular the seagrass beds' commented the OIC at her remarks and she further alluded the importance of this project activities with the contributions to aquaculture development in Kiribati.
The Ministry extends words of gratitude for the tremendous support of Japan OFCF in this area, including the provision of equipments and the technical support of Dr Ohashi who has been instrumental in his expertise in providing the transfer of knowledge to the hatchery staff.
The Ministry also wishes to applaud the team from the aquaculture unit for their continuous suport and perseverance for making this project successful in Kiribati.

Kiribati Achieves Milestone with Seafood Toxicology Lab Launch

Another milestone is achieved today with the launch of a new MFOR Seafood Toxicology laboratory Division and newly recruited Director and Specialists. The new team was welcomed by Secretary Riibeta Abeta, the management team and Project Manager of PROP who provided funding for this new division. This welcome also marked the closing of an induction training of our new Seafood Toxicology Lab staff today conducted by Director of Kiribati Seafood Verification Division and her team. The induction training covered topics on regulatory frameworks, safe and quality seafood products, certification processes, among other things. The establishment of this new laboratory division dedicated for the Ministry will expand future ambitions of the government to strengthen hygiene and standards for our exported products, the needed seawater quality monitoring, extracting compounds relevant for value-added and pharmaceutical products for potential export in the future. The MFOR warmly welcomed new lab staff and acknowledged the World Bank PROP for the financial support provided to this new venture.

Supporting Local Fishermen: MFOR and OFCF Improve Infrastructure & Training

The team from Coastal Fisheries Division, MFOR and their counterpart technical experts from the OFCF visited Kiritimati Island to carry out important missions which include, repair of the existing workshops, ice machines, FAD fabrication and deployment, fishing technologies, training of local mechanics, fishermen, and MFOR staff stationed in Kiritimati. This program is part of the OFCF FDAPIN program which provided financial and technical assistance to Kiribati. The MFOR acknowledges the support of the World Bank through PROP Kiribati Project and Japan OFCF for their on-going program which benefited the local communities working in the fishing sector.
